About our Name
Red Sky Prints takes its name from the old saying, "Red sky at night: sailor's delight; red sky in the morning: sailor take warning." Besides its obvious connection with the nautical world, we like the way this saying honors those who go through life with their eyes open, ready to notice and able to interpret life, morning and night.
Understanding Art
Our sailing friends asked us to explain art terminology to them, but we know that sailing language, some of which is used in titles, is just as obscure. Please feel free to ask if any term is confusing.
Giclée Prints. Giclée printing is done via a highly specialized method for spraying ink. Giclée (j-clã) is a French term for "spray."
Giclée printing has transformed the reproduction of fine art with archival paper, a revolutionary pigmented ink and special equipment (the Roland Giclée Printmaker). By delaying fading, this delivers an unsurpassed longevity, with color-fastness and UV resistance in the range of 90-100 years.
Just as important, the Giclée process has introduced a new richness of color and detail to prints - so good, in fact, that some museums use Giclée prints to replace paintings on loan to traveling exhibitions or other museums.
Certificate of Authenticity. With its crisp detail and rich color, Giclée has quickly become the new standard for artists, galleries, museums and fine art publishers. We use only authentic Giclée printing and attach a certificate of authenticity to that effect.
Chromogenic (C-Print) Photographs. The chromogenic developing process uses three emulsion layers (each corresponding to a color) to transform a color transparency or negative to the highest quality photographic print.
This complex development process produces an extraordinary depth and smoothness of color. Because C-prints are quite sensitive to bright light, they should be stored and displayed with care.
